LSME Perspectives on Succeeding in the Workplace

It used to be that higher education was the preserve of an elite few in society, who often came from already privileged backgrounds and who used their time at University to further capitalise upon their social networks and from there into long term careers. However, since the 1960s there has been a policy drive to enable students from so called ‘Widening Participation’ (WP) backgrounds to access and benefit from higher education.

The growth of Higher Education (HE) as a destination for a wider range of candidates has led to the emergence of Institutions such as the London School of Management Education (LSME), which are well placed to provide high quality and accessible opportunities through which to experience the transformative power of Higher Education, something that LSME has been doing successfully and with great results since 2007.

In today’s complex and challenging economic and social conditions, all HE students face challenges in finding meaningful and appropriate employment. In a landscape marked by job market competition, qualification inflation, AI-driven automation, and shifting societal expectations, it is often necessary to be able to demonstrate additional qualities to stand out from the crowd. LSME is excellent at providing opportunities for its students to prepare for life after graduation, by encouraging the combination of skills developed during study, facilitating networking reach, and by helping students to take an adaptive approach in showcasing their special qualities. This includes:

  • Adding extra value to qualifications and being relevant to emerging ‘Now’ challenges (e.g. UN PRME values and ethos, regular events aligned with social issues)
  • Using AI collaboratively and as a tool to complement success
  • Effective networking and use of available support structures (e.g. Employability and Enterprise Hub / EEH)
  • Ensuring financial and social challenges are addressed early (e.g. personalised learning plans and a commitment to one to one support throughout your studies)
  • Being growth-oriented and resilient
  • Anticipating (and not waiting for) social and economic change

Let’s take a look at these in a little more detail below:

Going Beyond Degree Specialism to Combat ‘Qualification Inflation’

LSME encourages students to look for opportunities to ‘Upskill’ with Micro-Credentials
Short, industry-recognised certifications (e.g. via LinkedIn Learning, or Google Career Certificates) are often available in high-demand fields like data analysis, AI literacy, digital marketing, or sustainability. These can be used to complement academic study and help to develop specialised knowledge and expertise.

Focus on Transferable Skills

Developing soft skills (critical thinking, communication, emotional intelligence) and digital fluency (AI tools, coding basics) generates qualities that are likely to remain valuable even as job roles evolve.

Leverage Apprenticeships and Work Placements

Use opportunities to take part in programs like the ‘Kickstart Scheme’ or employer partnerships (e.g. LSME EEH etc) which offer hands-on experience and pathways to permanent roles.

Adapt to Technology, but Don’t Rely on it!

We recognise that AI is a feature of the employment landscape now, so we need to learn how to collaborate with its capabilities by mastering tools like generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, OpenAI etc) to boost personal productivity in tasks like research, writing, or design. AI awareness and capability is now a competitive necessity and part of the syllabus.

We need to remember to focus on the Human side of Work

AI struggles with creativity, empathy, and complex decision-making, which means that fields like counselling, education, healthcare, or ethical AI governance will provide opportunities for people led work.

Build Your Networks and Access Available Support Systems

Networking is a skill and a competency that can transform your prospects
Organisations like UpReach™, Bright Network™, or Access Accountancy® can connect LSME students with mentors, internships, and employers committed to diversity. In the future, software applications like CapLink (an AI enabled employability toolkit) will automatically link you with relevant opportunity, and help you to become more proactive in ensuring you take advantage.

Engage with In House Career Services

Many institutions (e.g. LSME’s Employability and Enterprise Hub – EEH) offers tailored support for our students, including CV workshops, mock interviews, and employer events.

Use LinkedIn Strategically

Connect with professionals in target industries, join groups that are relevant to your interests and aspirations (e.g., Young Women in Business), and follow thought leaders to stay updated on opportunities.

Address Financial and Social Barriers Early in your Studies

Look for Grant Funding and Bursaries
Apply for scholarships (e.g., The Sutton Trust , The Lord Mayor’s Appeal) or negotiate employer-sponsored support (e.g. via the Apprenticeship Levy) that might cover course fees or living costs.

Access Free Resources: Platforms like FutureLearn™, edX™, or the National Careers Service offer free courses to build skills without financial strain.

Find Community
Seek out and join (or start!) relevant and focused groups and societies in the local and regional community, for peer support and shared experiences.

Cultivate a Growth Mindset and Resilience

LSME encourages our students (and alumni!) to embrace Lifelong Learning
The job market will keep changing—we encourage a mindset of continuous improvement. The AI revolution will bring profound change to the workplace in the short to medium term, and many of us will likely need to re-train to embrace new ways of working at some point.

Leverage Storytelling

We are proud of the diverse cultural and social mix in our student body, which provides opportunities to share unique, resilient narratives. We encourage our students and graduates to use who you really are and what you believe in, to engage in interviews (e.g., balancing work/family commitments while studying) and showcase your strengths and adaptability.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

LSME provides all students with access to counselling services and resources to manage stress and build personal resilience when exposed to competitive environments.

Align with Societal Shifts

We believe LSME graduates can be Advocates for Equity
As part of the learning environment, we engage with organisations that promote fair access to education and jobs (e.g., Race Equality Foundation, Disability Rights UK). Employers increasingly value candidates who align with their ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) goals, so your experience at LSME provides unique and highly valuable insights into the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (UNPRME), that equips LSME students with understanding and awareness that students at other institutions never achieve.

LSME encourages our students to be vocal and visible in a positive way
Using social media to build personal profiles that provide thought leadership for others on key emerging issues facing your local area, region, country and the globe is a great way of using your voice. Events like our annual International Conference provide an excellent platform for sharing views and building your network.

Summary

We believe that LSME students can be confident in any conversation with potential employers, and can thrive by combining technical and human skills, building strategic networks, and leveraging support systems that have been designed to level the playing field. Institutions and employers increasingly recognise and value diverse perspectives, and proactive engagement with these opportunities can turn challenges into stepping stones.
