Course Overview

These qualifications intended to support adult learners that want to improve their English language. They are designed to develop the literacy skills and capabilities that those who are speakers of languages other than English need to take a full part in education, at work and in the society.

Course Aims / Objectives

The Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life awarded by Pearson has been designed to facilitate programmes that enable learners who are speakers of languages other than English to:

  • Progress to the next level in manageable steps.
  • Achieve a level of attainment in English which is appropriate to their needs.
  • Use language at a level to function at work and in society in general.
  • Follow a structured course of study.
  • Find work.

Target Groups

Learners who may benefit from the Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life qualifications are speakers of languages other than English, including, for example asylum seekers, refugees and other migrates that have settled or what to reside in the UK.

Course Structure

Pearson offer Certificates in ESOL Skills for Life at the following Levels:

  • Entry 1, 2 and 3
  • Level 1
  • Level 2

They are based upon the National Standards for Adult Literacy and the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum. The qualifications offered by Pearson at Entry 1, 2, 3 conform to the requirements of the QCF Entry Level Criteria. The qualifications at Levels 1 and 2 conform to the requirements of the QCF Common Criteria.

There are three mandatory units available at each Level:

  • Speaking and Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

Each unit, at each Level, consists of one unit, which is assessed by means of a unit test. Tests have specific time limits and these may vary between unit and Level. It is important to stress that many learners might not be ready for assessment of all units at the same time or Level. Units

Unit achievement is available for each level. Learners obtain the whole qualification at each level by achieving all three units.

Functional Skills

LSME always strives to achieve success for its students and critical to this is being equipped with practical skills needed to live, learn and work successfully. We have therefore invested and developed resources and courses in Functional skills that will improve students existing and/or create new skills. The functional skills that will be available are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

Pearson Functional Skills Qualification

These Pearson awarded qualifications are intended to develop a range of vital skills in English, Maths, and ICT. They have been accredited onto the National Qualifications.

Framework (NQF) and are funded by the Department for Education (DfE) under Section 96 of the Learning and Skills Act 2000. They have been designed to fit employers skills demand to ensure that learners are able to apply it in different work and educational settings. It also focuses on teaching learners how to apply these skills in everyday contexts and circumstances.

Aim

Functional skills provide learners with the ability to clearly express their communication skills in literacy and numeracy and when using the computer.

Targeted Groups

The qualification is for any one that wants;

  • To improve in their literacy, numeracy and ICT skills
  • To gain the qualifications for education or employment purposes
  • An equivalent to GCSE A-C (Level 2 Maths and English)
  • To apply for their QTLS (Teachers status)

Functional Skills English

Functional Skills English qualifications consist of 3 mandatory components:

  • Speaking, listening and communication
  • Reading
  • Writing

They are available in Level 1 and Level 2 (Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE A-C).

Assessment for speaking, listening and communication will be task based and internally assessed, while reading and writing will be conducted onscreen and externally assessed by Pearson. All tests are based on real life scenarios and are available on demand. Learners obtain the whole qualification at each level.

Functional Skills Maths

Functional skills maths qualification covers:

  • Representing – selecting the mathematics and information to model a situation.
  • Analysing – processing and using mathematics.
  • Interpreting – interpreting and communication the results of the analysis.

They are available in Level 1 and Level 2 (Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE A-C).

Assessment will be conducted onscreen and is externally assessed by Pearson. All tests are available on demand. Learners obtain qualification at each level.

 Functional Skills ICT

Functional skills ICT qualification covers:

  • Using ICT
  • Finding and selecting information
  • Developing, presenting and communicating information

They are available at Level 1 and Level 2.

Assessments are externally assessed through a 2 hour test paper. Learners will be required to carry out a number of tasks using ICT systems (and appropriate resources). Tests are available on demand. Learners obtain qualification at each level.
