World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development 2020 was vibrantly celebrated in the virtual environment with some of the students coming in their traditional clothes, followed by whole class discussion on the importance and benefits of learning about different cultures around the world.
The day started with a short introduction on the topic of Diversity Day and its importance in society introduced by the Lecturers at the beginning of their regular online sessions of the day. Students appeared ready to discuss diversity and its importance to the community and how it affects their life. The highlight of the short event was a video on diversity prepared by UNESCO followed by general discussion on the justification for the celebration of diversity and its benefits. The students also shared information about their countries and the cultural heritage.
Given the popularity and success of the event last year, when the students could come together physically and showcase their traditional attire with exhibits representing their countries and culture, due to the Covid-19 situation they had to dress up and bring along their artifacts for show in their virtual classes. However, spirit was high as many of them came to the online classes in their traditional dresses and were greatly thrilled to tell their friends about their outfits. In addition to explaining about their cultures and uses of their artifacts, they had an exciting time while some took to express themselves through songs from their cultures.
Students appreciated the opportunity to express themselves and engage in the session and learn about different cultures of the world. At the end of the session, most of the students provided the feedback about their excitement and suggested having more of such sessions to learn more about cultural diversity and joint celebrations.
