Disability and Mental Health Support at LSME

Disablity

LSME is committed to providing equal opportunities for all members in all its activities and is determined to ensure that this commitment is reflected in practice through its policies and procedures as explained in the Equal Opportunities Policy. Further, the Disability Policy sets out to create an environment of inclusion and equal opportunities, recognition, provision of support networks, reasonable adjustments, learning and assessment support and facilitation of external support, where required.

The College attempts to recognise and understand students’ special needs and disabilities from the time of their admission and develops the Individual Learning Plans incorporating their needs, which is reviewed periodically.

The academic team reviews the needs of all students every term. Particular attention is given to students with special needs. Their reviews are conducted with their learning support team.  Information gathered from these reviews are used to agree on new individualised learning plans and targets for progression with their studies. Reasonable adjustments are made to the learning environment, resources, as well as the teaching, learning and assessment methods as per the advice of their learning support team.

The physical and learning environment has been made disability access compliant and yet LSME continues to assess the students’ needs and ensure reasonable adjustments as required whenever it is necessary. Step-free access, disability toilets, lift access, automatic lighting etc have been provided for students and staff.

LSME conducts regular sessions on Mental Health awareness for students and staff alike. These sessions are intended to increase awareness and sensitise students on mental health and wellbeing, to identify early signs, spot certain behaviours amongst peers and friends, extend support and to signpost to support services, if required. A number of online resources on Mental Health and Wellbeing are made available in the College Library and on the College Virtual Learning Environment.

A strictly confidential Student Counselling Support service is provided by the College on an appointment basis. Students can avail this service by emailing to studentcounsellor@lsme.ac.uk.

LSME became a Signatory to the ‘Charter for Employers Positive about Mental Health’ of Mindful Employer as part of the effort to facilitate students and staff enjoy good mental health and wellbeing. We are also a ‘Disability Confident Committed’ employer, creating enabling work environment for recruitment and support to employees with disabilities.
