Electoral Registration: Your Guide to Voting

Voting is an essential way to shape decisions that affect your daily life, from education and housing to the environment and national policy. To take part in any UK election, you must be registered to vote. This page provides clear, accessible guidance to help students understand voter registration, ID requirements, and why participation matters. As part of our commitment under the Office for Students (OfS) Condition E5, we ensure that every eligible student is supported in engaging with democracy.

Voting is one of the most important ways you can influence the decisions that shape your life. From tuition fees and housing to climate policy and healthcare, elected representatives make choices that affect you every day. But to vote in any UK election, you must be registered.

Registering to vote is quick, free, and easy. It takes just five minutes online at:
https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

You will need:

• Your full name
• Your address
• Your National Insurance Number (if you have one)

Once registered, you will receive a polling card before an election with details of where and when you can vote.

As of July 2025, the voting age has been lowered to 16 in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

Eligibility generally includes:

• British citizens
• Qualifying Commonwealth citizens
• EU citizens (depending on the type of election)

Recent UK government changes mean you must show a valid form of photo ID when voting in person for many elections.

Accepted forms include:

• Bank cards showing your name
• HM Armed Forces Veteran Card
• Digital IDs via the gov.uk wallet
• Voter Authority Certificates (including digital versions)
• Passport (UK or international)
• UK driving licence or provisional licence
• Citizen Card (NUS endorsed)

If you do not have valid ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate from your local council or online. Those registered for postal votes are also required to submit a copy of their valid photo ID to the local electoral office. You will normally receive this request via email or post.

Being on the electoral register does more than allow you to vote, it can also help you build a credit history, which is useful for:

• Mobile phone contracts
• Student loans
• Renting accommodation
